Who Requires a Mouthguard?
Mouthguards are typically worn by athletes who play contact sports with an increased risk of injuries to the face, and non-contact sports with a risk of falling.
Why is it important to get a mouthguard custom fitted?
A custom fitted mouthguard is needed In order for this to work at its role of cushioning the forces from knocks and hits. It shoudl also be comfortable to allow for clear speech and mouth breathing with exertion.This is important at every age and the thickness of the mouthguard will vary with the type of sport and contact involved.
How are dentist-grade mouthguards made?
Generally, the appointment to get your custom-fitted mouthguard will take approx 30 min.
- A digital scan is taken of both upper and lower jaws and a record of how your teeth bite together. Not only is the scan a comfortable way to take this record – especially for little kids with little mouths!! When its this accurate it means the mouthguard will fit snuggly.
- Once made the mouthguard is balanced or adjusted against the lower teeth so that in the event of a collision the jaws close together evenly and this distributes the forces evenly through your bones.
- Young kids who are still losing teeth – still deserve the best protection by a custom fitted mouthguard, downside is they will need a new one each season to allow for their growth. As parents, we understand this!
- Most importantly- mouthguards can be an expression of you in the choice of colour, design and importantly include your name and phone number in case you drop it

Custom-made dental mouthguards are priced depending on the intended use of the mouthguard i.e., a mouthguard for heavy-duty activities would need to be firmer and thicker than a less intensive sport.
With this in mind, creating a custom mouthguard in Brisbane typically costs between $150 and $300. Non-customized mouthguards, although cheaper and available in all pharmacies, offer neither an exact fit nor good protection
